My stay at Motel 6; yes, they left the light on for me!

They really do leave the light on for you!

For my vacation, I spent four days in Lansing just relaxing and trying not to think about my two jobs (newspaper and gas station). I was originally going to stay only three days, but a car repair led me to stay an extra day. Maybe I’ll blog about that in an upcoming post.

My decision to come to Lansing stemmed from wanting to get out of the area where I lived, wanting to spend time with a friend and wanting to stay at a Motel 6. Cheap price, decent rooms, I was told. The last time I stayed at a Motel 6 was summer 1986 when we stayed at one overnight north of Los Angeles somewhere…I think it was San Luis Obispo but I don’t remember.

So, I went to the one in Lansing and as I paid for my room and walked towards it, I wondered…is $40 plus change one of those “You get what you pay for” deals?

Thankfully, no.

On the commercials, Tom Bodette talks about how Motel 6 has “clean, comfortable rooms” at the lowest price of any national chain.

Based on the four nights I stayed there, the best way I could describe Motel 6 is modest but comfortable.

What I liked: the room and bathroom were clean. The TV got ESPN and a few other decent channels that were interesting. TBS provided a few episodes of The Big Bang Theory, a personal favorite. The air conditioner worked decently. The bed was comfortable. (It was actually a room of two full-sized beds separated by a nightstand, and I later found that my two youngest sons–being under 17–could’ve stayed with me at no extra charge). The staff was very friendly.

What I didn’t like: The bathroom supply of soap consisted of two tiny bars that didn’t last very long. The A.C. worked decently but, given the weather, I wish it had worked better. The dead bolt seemed to work only half way. The TV channels were limited, so I was at the mercy of ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, HBO, ESPN and a few others. HBO played a few episodes of True Blood, a show that doesn’t even remotely interest me since the vampire genre bores me.

Otherwise, as far as motels go, Motel 6 wasn’t too bad. When I checked in, I told the lady at the front desk: “Tell Tom Bodette he can turn the light off now.” She laughed.

I stayed at the motel 6 off of ceasar Chavez in Albuquerque New Mexico last night and it was horrible first room I checked into had roaches in the bathroom so I called front desk and moved rooms and the second one had a a cigarette burned comforter, sheets had hair and upon pulling back the bed the fitted sheet to my horrific surprise was a disgusting pee staind mattress with blood stains! I tried to recover my money but to no avail they didn’t give me a refund so beware of the uncleanliness of Motel 6
