Muntadhar al-Zeidi’s released from prison, still defiant
You remember al-Zeidi…the “journalist” who threw his shoe at then-President Bush during a news conference.
Notice I put “journalist” in quotation marks. I understand there are cultural differences, but when you’re a journalist you’re supposed to be unbiased. That kind of behavior can’t happen. Ever. It would even be unprofessional even for a columnist.
Please, spare me the “shoe throwing in the Middle East is a show of contempt.” I get that. If al-Zeidi were there in the capacity of a private citizen, it would be a different matter.
And now, al-Zeidi’s being released from jail and is unrepentant. He calls today’s Iraq an American occupation.
Just think, Mr. A-Z, if you’d done this while Saddam Hussein had been in power, you wouldn’t be released from jail. You and probably your family would’ve been tortured to death.
