Michael Jackson: Larger than Life Even in Death

I asked someone yesterday if they’re sad Michael Jackson’s dead. They scoffed: “Oh, that pedophile’s dead?”

From what I remember of Mr. Jackson, he was acquitted of child molestation and paid off two families whose children accused him of inappropriate behavior. I remember one child claimed Jackson liked to play a game called “Rubba.”

In some ways, I think Jackson’s death was the best thing for him. His finances were in shambles, evidenced by his Neverland Ranch being in potential foreclosure and in the countless lawsuits he faced for unpaid services. At the time of his death, he was preparing for a series of “comeback” concerts that were probably more intended to pay his bills than they were to launch a new stage of his career.

Jackson’s album sales are now said to be soaring. While it’s possible it’ll take years to settle his estate, Jackson’s post-mortem notoriety will no doubt cause his estate to race back into the black (no pun intended).

These days, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe usually are atop the list of dead celebrities whose estates make the most money. Jackson may soon join them.
