Can someone identify this pitcher?

Years ago, my Uncle Don (Dad’s older brother) gave me a college graduation gift of a book on baseball anecdotes called Peanuts and Crackerjack. The author, Dave Cataneo, relays this story of feisty longtime baseball manager Leo Durocher.

Durocher wanted his pitcher to hit a batter. “If you don’t hit the batter, I’m going to fine you $500.”

First two pitches were balls, nowhere near hitting the batter. The third was in the dirt near the batter’s feet. He jumped and avoided the ball. So, he figures on a 3-0 count he should see a great pitch right down the heart of the plate.

Wrong. The fourth pitch hits him on the kneecap.

Seeing he hit the batter and avoided the fine, the pitcher starts jumping up and down on the mound shouting, “I GOT HIM! I GOT HIM!”

In the anecdote, the person telling it declines to say who the pitcher was, saying, “He’s still around.”

This book was published in 1994…does anyone have any idea who the pitcher was?
