Dictatorships give President Obama tests

During one debate, then-Democratic presidential hopeful and current vice president Joe Biden said the White House wasn’t the place for on-the-job training.

Now, it appears President Obama will be getting all the “training” he can handle.

Iran has sentenced a reporter of both American and Iranian nationality to eight years in prison for allegedly spying on Iran for America. The reporter was said to have been tried in secret in what, no doubt, amounts to Iran’s version of a kangaroo court…

…During a Summit of the Americas speech by Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega, President Obama sat and listened as the former Sandanista leader spent 50 minutes thundering about “terroristic U.S. aggression” in Central America. Asked after the speech what he thought, Mr. Obama replied: “It was 50 minutes long. That’s what I thought.”…

…At the same conference, Venezuelan dictator/president Hugo Chavez, when meeting Obama, gave him a book that accuses the U.S. of exploiting Latin America for centuries (I’m not posting a link to the book or its title, but you can find it in the article link if you’re that curious). Chavez, of course, seems to forget that if it weren’t for his Spanish and African ancestors coming to Venezuela, he would’ve never existed. It’s too bad Obama didn’t give Chavez a copy of The Reagan Diaries or, at the very least, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago

As I look at President Obama, seeing him deal with hostile nations is what concerns me the most. He talks about “rebuilding” ties that certain former presidents have damaged, but I wonder how long it’ll take him to realize or even acknowledge there’s only so much that can be really done when you’re dealing with madmen who want to see the destruction of America and its democracy. After all, how long do you think a Latin version of Michael Moore would last in Venezuela making documentaries critical of Chavez? Or an Iranian filmmaker making documentaries critical of the Islamic government that controls Iran?

It makes me wonder if there are any days where President Obama, in the privacy of the Oval Office or in his bedroom, ever stops and thinks, “WHEW! This job is a lot tougher than I expected it to be! What have I gotten myself into?”
