Will the White House become “Obama’s Family”?
A slight play on words from that popular eighties sitcom Mama’s Family. Thelma “Mama” Harper was played, of course, by Vicky Lawrence of The Carol Burnett Show fame.
Here’s what I mean: someone at church today remarked how they’d seen Barack Obama on television yesterday and he had this haggard look on his face. It looked, to them, like he was stressed and overwhelmed.
You know, the type of look a person has when they realize they’ve bitten off far more than what they can chew.
This reminds me of a Mama’s Family episode called “Mama for Mayor”. In this two-part episode, Mama gets her wish and unseats the incumbent mayor from office. But as she settles down into her new job, she realizes that there is much, much more to being a mayor than she thought: budget and policy meetings, dealing with media, reading over various bills and laws, and on and on. By the end of that day, Mama’s so stressed and frustrated that she ends up resigning as mayor and returning to private life.
Makes you wonder if Obama’s realizing right away that there is far more involved with being a president than just going around promoting his book, making speeches about “change” and getting pictures with Oprah Winfrey. I wonder how long we’ll go from referring to Obama’s era as “The Obama Administration” to “Obama’s Family”?
